For June we will be reading Rubyfruit Jungle by Rita Mae Brown.

Unlike last month, we are going totally blind into this book as we have not read it yet! But as it is considered a classic of modern lesbian literature we thought it would be a good choice for our second month of the book club.

Similar to last month’s book, Rubyfruit Jungle is a partly autobiographical account of the author’s own childhood and is a lesbian coming of age story.

At the time of publishing (1973) it was considered to be a ground-breaking portrayal of lesbian sexuality. However today, it has faced fair criticism due to the author’s portrayal of butch lesbians and culture in a very critical (almost hateful) light.

We are hoping it will spark some good conversation in the July meeting of the Virtual Lesbian Library.
