The Price of Salt
For our fourth month of book club we will reading The Price of Salt by Patricia Highsmith. It was originally published under the pseudonym Claire Morgan.
This story might be better known to some as Carol as it was adapted into a popular film in 2015. Due to its popularity the book has been republished as Carol to tie in with the film.
The Price of Salt follows the story of Therese who after a chance encounter with a woman named Carol, develops an obsession with her. It was notable at the time for being a rare example of lesbian literature that does not end in tragedy.
Highsmith is possibly most famous for her novel Strangers on a Train. As an author of psychological thrillers, she did not want to become boxed in as simply a ‘lesbian author’ which is why she chose to publish The Price of Salt under a different name initially.
