Our book for October will be No. 74 in the Penguin Little Black Classics, Come Close by Sappho. For those who don’t know, Sappho (c. 630 – c. 570 BC) was a greek poet from the island of Lesbos and is where we get the words sapphic and lesbian from! She is the only woman to be considered one of the nine lyric poets of Ancient Greece and has even been referred to as the Tenth Muse.
The Virtual Lesbian Library is our online book club hosted over Google Meet every second Sunday of each month at 6pm. However, this month it will be pushed back a day and held on Monday 11th November at the same time as usual. The link goes out to our mailing list, Discord and Instagram.
Join our Discord to take part in book club discussions throughout the month!
Come Close by Sappho

“Lyrical, powerful poems about love, sexuality, sun-soaked Greece and the gods.” [x]
Despite her acclaim, her work has been mostly lost over time. Luckily we still have fragments of her poem with one piece, Ode to Aphrodite, being almost complete.
This collection of her fragments is relatively short and a great place to start for anyone interested in her work.
Where can I read it?
You can purchase a physical copy of the book from Waterstones for £3 available >here<.
