Our book for the next two months will be Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Cafe by Fannie Flagg. We have decided to dedicate two whole months to this book due to its length and also the festive season.
The Virtual Lesbian Library is our online book club hosted over Google Meet every second Sunday of each month at 6pm. The link goes out to our mailing list, Discord and Instagram.
Join our Discord to take part in book club discussions throughout the month!
Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Cafe

“Folksy and fresh, endearing and affecting, Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Cafe is a now-classic novel about two women: Evelyn, who is in the sad slump of middle age, and gray-headed Mrs. Threadgoode, who is telling her life story. Her tale includes two more women, the irrepressibly daredevilish tomboy Idgie and her friend Ruth who back in the thirties ran a little place in Whistle Stop, Alabama, offering good coffee, southern barbecue, and all kinds of love and laughter, even an occasional murder. And as the past unfolds, the present will never be quite the same again..” [x]
This 1987 novel is the second book from lesbian author Fannie Flagg, who once shared a home with previous Virtual Lesbian Library book author Rita Mae Brown. Fannie went on to write the screenplay for the film adaptation of the book in 1991. We are excited to read such a classic of lesbian literature over the next two months!
